Editorial Design for my Scientific Research Proposal Design & Kunst – Über das Verhältnis zweier Disziplinen. This paper investigates several expert opinions regarding the problematic distinction between art and design and examines which factors are nowadays relevant for the categorization of works into one of these fields. Afterwards, it analyses contemporary works by Barbara Kruger, Clifford Jago, Jonathan Castro and Braulio Amado.
This research proposal unveils that the differentiation of art and design, based on functionality and autonomy, is no longer up to date and that many more aspects are to be considered. Relevant aspects for a categorization are for example the context of the works and their symbolic systems. Due to many ways of working, several existing sub-disciplines, different educational paths, different viewpoints and levels of knowledge, and due to the break with traditional platforms and conventions, the elaboration of unambiguous features and characteristics turns out to be difficult today. The boundaries between art and design have become increasingly blurred and the disciplines have merged together.
