Image-Based Works

While the image has become a commodity in today's media landscape, Matthias is interested in the image as a medium for artistic research. At the same time, this practice fertilizes his sensitivity to visual narratives for commercial use.

Arbritaty Imitations

What Makes an Image Authentic?

The work Arbitrary Imitations addresses the commodification of images through artificial intelligence and the resulting perception, that the emergence of algorithmic social media feeds as well as generative AI systems, have led to a devaluation of cultural production, creating a media landscape of aesthetic relativism.

The Image Sensor

Concrete Abstractions

The Image Sensor deals with the transformation of a phenomenon into a visual image. The work shows an exploration of an iridescent material through various image capturing processes.

Hidden Spheres

Revealing AI Aesthetics

The work Hidden Spheres provides a deep dive into the inner workings of a generative machine learning model by revealing the otherwise invisible structures of a deep neural network. For this work, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) was trained on a dataset of planetary imagery using the StyleGan3 architecture, and then inspected using its interactive model visualization tool.

Cosmic Blossoms

Imagining Life in Space

Inspired by NASA's groundbreaking achievement of growing the first flower in space, "Cosmic Blossoms" offers a visual journey to imagine what life in space might look like.

Computational Colors

Computing a Color Space through Machine Learning

The work Computational Colors offers a monochromatic view of the capabilities of generative AI, while also addressing the transition from one era of (generative) AI art to another.

Translating Objects to a Two-Dimensional Surface

Project 990, 998, 801 shows the translation of three-dimensional objects onto a two-dimensional surface. Using a handheld scanner, the surfaces of selected New Balance sneakers were scanned and digitally assembled. The entire surface was captured after many scans due to the low depth of field during scanning and the portability of the handheld scanner.

Viewfinder

Exploration Through the Lens

Exploring the dual role of the camera's viewfinder as both receiver and transmitter of information, capturing, framing, and conveying aspects of the visual world.

Transitional Exposures

Dissolving the Picture Carrier

Transitional Exposures is a series of photographs of which only one physical copy exists. Each image in this series was developed from a single photographic negative. The negative was treated with chemicals and modified after a single development in the darkroom before a new print was made.

Paeonia / Paeonai

Documenting and Training a Blooming Cycle

The work Paeonia / Paeonai draws attention to the human involvement in constructing AI training data by creating a dataset and training generative AI models using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). It also addresses and explores the decision-making process connected to dataset construction by creating one from scratch and editing its visual appearance over the course of several training steps.

Matthias' creative practice is based on an integrated approach that flexibly combines creative disciplines, methods and ideas. There is no prescribed approach, as each project requires a different iterative process to come to life and successfully fulfill its purpose. Grounded in research and informed by current cultural phenomena, Matthias brings together intuitive ideas and experimentation in a strategic way, working collaboratively to develop creative concepts and implement them in a highly aesthetic manner. His practice ultimately translates into commercial brand identities, publications, digital interfaces, marketing and service strategies, as well as artistic research projects.
